The human eye contains a number of complex and minute structures that work with each other so that the individual can see structures, colors, shapes, and determine distances and sizes of objects, and the eye adapts steadily to changes in the surrounding environment, allowing the person to walk in dark rooms, or under bright sunlight, and it is worth noting that a small part of the eye appears in the face, as for the entire eyeball, it is the size and shape of table tennis, and its wall consists of three main layers, namely: the choroid, the sclera, and the retina, and here it can be said that the parts The eye is all delicate and sensitive structures, where the body protects these structures in several ways, for example, tears clean the eye from dust, dirt, and harmful objects, in addition to their importance in moisturizing the eye, and the cilia protect the visible part of the eye, and prevent the entry of harmful objects into it.

Eating certain types of foods

A group of nutrients contributes to maintaining the health and safety of the eyes, such as omega-3 fatty acid, beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, lutein, zinc, copper, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Rich in nutrients that it is recommended to eat to maintain the health and safety of the eyes, and these foods can be mentioned the following:

  • Legumes and nuts, such as:

 lentils, cashews, walnuts, and peanuts; Because nuts contain omega-3 fatty acids and high levels of vitamin E.

  • Beef: Beef contains high levels of zinc, which is one of the necessary elements to protect the eyes and maintain healthy eyesight.
  • Water: Taking care to drink enough water daily helps relieve symptoms of dry eyes. 
  • Sweet potatoes: They are rich in beta-carotene and are a good source of vitamin E.
  • Seeds: such as chia seeds, hemp seeds, and flax seeds, are rich in omega-3 and vitamin E. Green leafy vegetables, such as cabbage and spinach, these foods are rich in zeaxanthin and lutein, and are also a good source of vitamin C.
  • Eggs: Because they contain high levels of lutein, zeaxanthin, zinc, and vitamin A, they are one of the foods that contribute to maintaining eye health.
  • Dairy products: such as milk and yogurt, contain vitamin A and zinc.
  • Citrus fruits: Like oranges, they are rich in vitamin C, which is an essential nutrient for eye health.
  • Carrots: Carrots contain high levels of beta-carotene and vitamin A, which contribute to maintaining eye health.
  • Fish: especially salmon, is an important source of omega-3 fatty acid.

Many tips and behaviors can be followed to maintain the safety and health of the eyes, including the following:

  •  Ensure that the bodyweight remains healthy and ideal, as obesity and being overweight increase the risk of diabetes, and other diseases that negatively affect the health of the eyes.
  •  Checking a family history of eye disease, which helps to know if there is a risk of developing eye disease.
  • Be sure to wear appropriate protective eyewear when working in jobs that require eye protection.
  • Wearing protective glasses while playing sports, or doing any of the activities outside the home.

Protecting the eyes from the computer screen, by following many different tips, such as:

  • Make sure to repeat the blinking in case of suffering from dry eyes.
  • Make sure that the eyeglasses or contact lenses are modern and suitable for looking at the screen.
  • Rest the eyes every twenty minutes, so that they look at a distance of twenty feet, for twenty seconds.
  • Avoid exposure to glare from lights and windows. Sit on a comfortable, supportive seat.
  • Quit Smoking; Smoking makes a person more prone to developing eye problems, such as macular degeneration, optic nerve damage, and cataracts.
  •  Be sure to wear sunglasses when outside; This is to protect the eyes from both types A and B ultraviolet rays.
  • Undergo a comprehensive eye exam to check your vision; To ensure the safety of the eyes and eyesight, the doctor conducts a number of tests, including:
  • Retinoscopy: This test enables the doctor to measure the amount of refraction in the eye.
  • Tonometry : It is a test in which the amount of pressure inside the eye is measured.
  • Cover Test : It is one of the simple tests conducted by the doctor to determine the extent of compatibility of the eyes to work together.
  • Visual acuity test: This test is based on measuring an individual’s ability to see with both eyes.
  • Pupillary examinations: The reaction of the pupil and how it interacts with the light stimulus reflects a lot about the general health of the body and the eyes. For example, there are certain types of pupillary responses that indicate neurological problems.
  • Dilated fundus exam: where the pupil is dilated using a special type of drops that are placed in the eye so that the doctor can examine the blood vessels, the retina, the macula of the retina, the optic nerve, and the vitreous body.
